History
Literature and resources for historical research can be found at several locations within the Göttingen University Library (SUB Göttingen) – primarily in the Main Library, the Cultural Studies Department Library and the Historical Building
History at the Göttingen State and University Library (SUB)
Central Library (ZB)
The vast majority of printed historical literature is held in the Central Library (ZB). It can be searched for via the Göttingen University Catalogue (GUK) or via GöDiscovery, and requested for borrowing or for consultation. Some of the collection is also freely accessible in the Central Library’s reading room.
Historical Building (HG)
Literature on History is also freely accessible in the open stacks at the reading room of the Historical Building. The collection focuses particularly on the history of universities, education, knowledge and science in the early modern period and the long 19th century.
Departmental Library of Cultural Studies (BBK)
The interdisciplinary Cultural Studies Library brings together 22 libraries from various departments and seminars within the Faculty of Arts. It also includes the open-access collections of the Department of Ancient History, the Department of Medieval and Modern History, and the Institute for Regional Historical Research.
E-books
E-books can be searched for and accessed directly via the Göttingen University Catalogue (GUK) or GöDiscovery. They are also available in subject-specific databases as well as in interdisciplinary databases such as the National Licenses Collection: Monographs. University members can access titles licensed for the campus even when they are off the campus network.
Electronic journals
Electronic journals relevant to historical research can be accessed directly via the Göttingen University Catalogue (GUK) or via GöDiscovery. The Electronic Journals Library (EZB) also provides a subject-based overview. University members can access journals licensed for the campus even when they are outside the campus network.
Specialist databases
Much of the content relevant to historical studies can be searched for and accessed via specialist databases. You can access resources freely available online and all history databases licensed by the Göttingen State and University Library (SUB) directly via the Database Information System (DBIS).
Relevant collections for historical research can also be found, amongst others, in the Departmental Library for Economic and Social Sciences (economic and social history), in the libraries of the Faculty of Law (legal and constitutional history), in the library of the United Theological Seminars (church and religious history), and in the Waldweg Library (subject didactics).
If a title you are looking for is not available at a library on the Göttingen campus, it may be possible to order it via the interlibrary loan service. Alternatively, you can submit a purchase request for an e-book or a print title.
