Help with Special Collections

We provide support for questions about our collections and offer guided tours and special presentations for academic purposes. During our digital consultation sessions you receive focused guidance for working with the Göttingen holdings.

On Site

Our team is happy to assist you with questions about historical materials and how to use them at the service desk in the reading room. If you need guidance getting started on your topic or navigating our catalogues, you can also schedule an individual consultation with us. Please use our contact form or get in touch directly with the staff member responsible for your area of interest.

Contact Form (to do)

By Phone or Email

We also answer your questions by email or phone. Please note that our services cannot replace working directly with the original materials. For general subject-related inquiries, please contact the subject librarian for your field of study. Assistance with palaeographic questions is available, but only to a limited extent.

Guided Tours and Collection Presentations

We organise guided tours of the Historical Building upon request for researchers and as part of courses at the University of Göttingen. These tours can also include presentations of selected historical holdings. Please contact us to discuss what is possible and plan your visit.

Additionally, we offer a public guided tour for all interested visitors on the last Thursday of each month, highlighting the history of the Göttingen University Library. Visit our event calendar for information on upcoming events and opportunities to explore our historical collections.

Digital Consultation Sessions

Are you planning a visit to the SUB Göttingen and would like to get an overview of the historical holdings in advance? Our digital consultation sessions give you the opportunity to prepare specifically for working with the Göttingen collections.

During the consultation, selected pages (e. g., provenance marks, illustrations, textual variants) or examples from larger collections can be shown. Please note that this service may be limited for legal or conservation reasons. Complete works will not be browsed virtually. This format is not available for genealogical requests to the University Archive.

This service is primarily intended for researchers with a clearly defined question or a specific research topic. Appointments are scheduled according to staff availability.

How to schedule a digital consultation:

  • Send an email request with a clear description of your research question.
  • If you wish to view specific works, please provide the shelfmark and title of the work.
  • You will receive a confirmationwith a link to join the online consultation.

Please note: If you do not log in within 15 minutes of the scheduled time, the appointment will expire, and a new appointment must be arranged.
